Your Local Bakery
Our History.
Hootenanny Bread was founded by me; Derek DeGeer in 2011. I had just moved back from NYC with my wife and 9 month old daughter Frances after having been chasing an art career around the city for a decade. I went to the first Kneading Conference and was blown away about how far down the rabbit hole there was to go with artisan bread. I began baking feverishly and was giving it out as gifts to the families in my music and movement class (Hootenanny). One of the parents in my class (a farmer) suggested that I apply for the local farmers market; their baker had just quit.
Good friends had a restaurant in town and said I could use their kitchen off-hours and they would buy dinner bread for the restaurant… I always knew I liked making art, I just didn’t know how much I loved making connections and talking about myself! Farmers markets were immediately my favorite thing to do and people loved me! Hootenanny Bread was born.
Hootenanny Bread now serves 6 markets from Damariscotta to Brunswick and about a dozen wholesale accounts (Food co-ops, restaurants, and 1 food hub) and we’re still growing! Look for us at your favorite Mid-coast market, restaurant, and store. See us at the Common Ground Fair, the Maine Artisan Bread Fair, and the Maine Cheese Festival.
